Not long now – less than two weeks! – till the next Voices open mic evening at Javabean Cafe, and the first of 2019. We – David and Peppy – are very much looking forward to returning after a longer than usual gap. There is no theme to the event this time, but if spring inspires you, that will do nicely.
For those who are new to Voices, you are most warmly welcome to attend as a performer or as a member of our kind, friendly audience. There is no entry fee either way, and beer, wine, soft drinks and hot beverages are available at the cafe counter. Open mic slots are 3-4 minutes in length and there is usually the opportunity to perform more than once during the evening – just sign up on the door.
The emphasis is on words, with original material enthusiastically encouraged, be it poetry, song, flash fiction, monologue, comedy skit… Anything goes! If you prefer to perform a cover, that’s fine too. We provide a house guitar, a ukulele and PA; bring your own backing track as required, or let us know in advance if you need a karaoke track lined up. Due to restricted space, we ask that you not bring your own instruments along – we might waive the rules for a triangle or a harmonica with particularly strong sentimental attachments, but the grand piano will be refused entry.
Besides, a grand piano would be much too, well, grand. We are all about gathering for an evening of entertainment in a spirit of informality, friendship and fun. Come and join us!
PS Voices is intended for adult audience/participation, so we make no special undertaking to be “family-friendly”. We encourage young local talent to be seen and heard at the regular Under-18’s open mic events at The Forum.
